The Ruby - Why?

We love swimming in the lake. Honestly, it's as simple as that.

Back in mid 2014 we thought it would be a good idea to bring something new (and different) into play which features a 'race' at a good middle distance between a half ironman (1.9km) and the full distance (3.8km). The circumnavigation of Ruby Island at 2.5km fits the bill. And then... someone had the bright idea that The Ruby needed a 10km swim too. And from that a logical addition was the 5km distance.

 

But the event is not just about the how fast you can go.

Ruby Island is an icon in our landscape, featured in thousands of photos and in the lore of Wanaka. It stands as a sentinel - in sight, but also just out of reach. To swim around it is the most brilliant experience and it holds a special surprise as you swim past the southern tip. So race it or experience it. It's a good outing either way.

 

Jamie and I, as do all Wanaka Lake Swimmers, love being in the lake, love socialising afterwards, love a few beers, a wine or two, a slice of cake perhaps and love the untold benefits swimming provides.

 

The idea is that The Ruby is as much a celebration of swimming and the zen of being in The Lake as it is about a time over a set distance.
